Sarvadhana Sangam
The story about us

The history of the Sarvadhana Sangam people's movement is not an old one.
We were a group of young south Indian people meeting under the village Tamarind tree. We discussed our difficult living circumstances, the unjust social structure, local exploitation and political manipulation, the ignorance of the majority, and the overall insecure future for us, the young generation.
After a few more meetings in the shade of the tree, we came to the conclusion that perhaps the collective effort of this small group perhaps could make a change.
We decided to begin with organizing a collective work camp, Shramadhana, in our village, to repair the old village road.
After the successful completion of our first task, many more "village improvements" were initiated. In the beginning we focused on important basic problems like the lack of clean drinking water, basic housing for everyone, a health care facility, a village primary school, a small Post office and telephone connection.
As a result of the collective effort and everyone's enthusiasm, it became clear just how potent our initiative was. Within six months time, eleven more villages in the same area joined us in the village Porkunam.
This is how we created Sarvadhana Sangam, the people's movement.

Sarva = all
Dhana = sharing

Today Sarvadhana is engaged in nearly 50 village communities and few urban communities in Tamil Nadu, south India.
The organization has initiated a vast number of projects and networks, aimed at helping low cast and "out-cast"(dalits) people to uplift their socio-economic standard.

Because Sarvadhana was created by local, low cast people, the organization has proven to be very effective in addressing problem at the grass root level by innovative and simple solutions.
Some of the most difficult issues that face the organization is the widespread neglect and abuse of young girls, child labor, lack of employment or land, wage issues, caste problems, women's suppression, illiteracy and health hazards.

Basic human needs
Sarvadhana's focus is primarily on the basic needs of people in the community. They have been identified as:

o Un-polluted environment
o Education
o Health care
o Adequate drinking water
o Sources of energy
o Housing
o Income
o Communication and Socio-cultural needs.
o Spiritual "connectedness"
